WordPress is updated. What else should you check?

Website security does not end with a green update notice. Check extensions, access and the ability to restore the site.

A WordPress update notice with open questions about access and backups. All updated. All secure?
In brief

Maintain the whole website environment, not just the WordPress core version.

Who is affected: Owners of WordPress websites.

Why is one update not enough?

The official WordPress security guide covers plugins, passwords, the web server, backups and monitoring as well as core updates. This is an explainer, not a report of a new WordPress vulnerability.

A green update notice does not answer all those questions. A website owner benefits from knowing who is responsible for each part.

What should you review?

  1. Updates. Do WordPress, active plugins and the theme still receive security updates?
  2. Access. Is administrator access limited to people who currently need it?
  3. Backups. Is there a recent copy and a known way to restore the site?
  4. Maintenance. Who watches security advisories, and who acts when something goes wrong?

Where should fixes come from?

Use the official update channel for WordPress and each plugin or theme. The WordPress security guide warns against downloading the software from arbitrary websites. Do not install an unfamiliar “security fix” just because an email or advertisement recommends it.

What should you ask your maintainer?

Please confirm which parts of my website need updates, who has administrator access, and when restoration was last tested. Please identify anything outside the maintenance scope separately.

An external check offers only part of the picture. Reviewing administrator accounts, the complete plugin inventory and backups requires separately authorised access.
